Commuter Transportation and Parking

Part of being a commuter means knowing all of the parking tips around campus.

Here are four tips for making parking on campus easier.

Buy a Parking Permit
In mid-August, students will be able to purchase permits allowing them to park at their assigned lots on one of the five campuses. Permits can be purchased at rudots.rutgers.edu, and multiple cars can be registered to your permit!
Park in Your Assigned Lot
Your day pass only allows you to park in one lot on your specific campus. To see what lots are assigned to your permit’s zone and to see which additional lots you can park in after 6pm, go to rudots.rutgers.edu. If you park in a lot not assigned to you, you risk getting a ticket. Unpaid tickets can lead to late fees, holds on class registration, and more.
Get to Class on Time!
Check for traffic alerts and road closures before you leave home. Keep in mind that inclement weather can make your commute longer. Always leave extra time between parking your car and taking the bus or walking to your class. You can check for class cancellations and delayed openings by visiting: newbrunswick.rutgers.edu/status.
Spending the Night?
There are a limited number of lots that allow you to park from 2am to 8am on each campus. Make sure you check the parking website (rudots.rutgers.edu) to see what lots there are for each campus should you be staying overnight at a friend’s place. Make sure your friend’s roommate(s) approve(s) of your stay and be respectful of their space.

Bicycle Rental Program

Bike rentals are available to all Rutgers students on all five campuses. Go to ipo.rutgers.edu/dots/bike-rental to register. Once registered, you can log into the system and rent your bike.

As part of the university's mission to provide cost effective and green transportation alternatives to the university community, the Department of Transportation Services offers a bike rental program that is available at central locations throughout the New Brunswick Campus.
Once registration is complete, users may log in to the automated bike rental system and check out bicycles for only $10 per month or $25 per semester.

Commuting to Campus: Public Transportation Options

Are you commuting to campus via public transportation? Here are some transportation methods available in New Jersey.

Trains

New Jersey Transit’s Northeast Corridor line provides New Brunswick with both local and express service between Penn Station in New York, Penn Station in Newark, and Trenton, New Jersey. For information: 973-275-5555.

SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) provides service at Trenton to and from Philadelphia. For information: 215-580-7800.

Amtrak provides limited direct service to New Brunswick. However, connections can easily be made via New Jersey Transit trains to principal Amtrak stations at Metro Park, New York, and Trenton. For information: 1-800-USA-RAIL.

Public Buses (NJ Transit)

810 New Brunswick-Woodbridge – Service between New Brunswick (Somerset Street and George Street near the New Brunswick Train Station) and Woodbridge (Woodbridge Center).

811 New Brunswick-South River – Service between New Brunswick (St. Peter’s Hospital) and South River (Jackson between Wilson/Raritan). This route also has a stop at Somerset Street and George Street near the New Brunswick Train Station.

814 New Brunswick-Edison – Service between North Brunswick (Fashion Plaza Mall) and Edison (Middlesex County College) with a stop at Somerset Street and George Street near the New Brunswick Train Station.

815 New Brunswick-Woodbridge – Service between New Brunswick (Somerset Street and George Street near the New Brunswick Train Station) and Woodbridge (Woodbridge Center) with a stop in New Brunswick at Burnet Street and Tunison Road.

818 New Brunswick-East Brunswick-Old Bridge – Service between New Brunswick (Somerset Street and George Street near the New Brunswick Train Station) and Old Bridge (Civic Center). This route also has a stop in New Brunswick at Burnet Street and Tunison Road.

Discounted NJ Transit Tickets for Students

NJ Transit offers a 25% discounted rate for monthly rail, bus, or light rail passes for full-time undergraduate and graduate students who purchase their pass online.
